I received one of the best compliments the other day from a friend and former co-worker. She sent me an image on Instagram that said “I woke up today and realized I don’t have what it takes to be average” and she sent it with a note that said “This reminds me of you”. Wow! Seriously, that might be the best compliment I’ve ever received.
This friend is a former employee of mine. She is every bit of the free-spirit that I am not. She left my employ to travel around Europe…SOLO! If not for work travel – I wouldn’t even go to Los Angeles solo! Since then she has left the legal field and is becoming a drug/alcohol addiction counselor. Talk about someone who woke up one day and realized that she didn’t have what it takes to be average.
But this quote got me thinking: how do I want to be thought of by others? What would I want others to say about me at my funeral? I know, that’s a little morose, but really, what impact do I want to leave behind on those I care about?
I think my friend came pretty close to nailing it. I want to be someone who encourages others to stretch themselves, to do what it takes to reach their full potential. I enjoy being a mentor. If I can help someone believe in themselves, then I’ve succeeded in my time on earth.
I saw a bumper sticker years ago that said L.I.F.E. stands for Living Intentionally For Excellence.
For me, that’s what life truly is about! I don’t expect more from others than what I am willing to do myself and I will never allow myself to be mediocre. But we can’t achieve excellence accidentally. You have to work for it. Live with intent. Don’t let life happen to you. Make it happen FOR you!
I encourage you to wake each day and commit to excellence. I believe in you!
